Sublime Design started humbly in a Chicago suburb in 1995 by Kristen, a graduate of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As a graphic designer at a Chicago multi-media agency, Kristen kept hearing the same thing over and over, “That’s the way we do it.” It didn’t make sense—while the company was making tons of money, the person who was waiting while deadlines were missed and invoices were artificially inflated was the client. After two years of “That’s the way we do it,” Kristen decided to branch out on her own. Sublime Design was born on a foundation of creativity, honesty and integrity.
RAMEN NOODLE SOUP
Don’t think the beginning was glamorous – it was anything but. With zero clients for the first six months, Kristen was hungry for work, literally! All of her start-up money was invested in a new computer system, and food became an unplanned for commodity (what an artist’s point of view!) At 10¢ a bag, those first six months saw cases of ramen noodle soup being consumed. FINALLY, A CLIENT!
One day the phone rang and it was that elusive item we had been looking for – a real client! A friend overheard someone needing design work and recommended Sublime Design for the project. The job was small – create a brochure for a local string trio – but it was a job. Sublime Design became an official design studio. We didn’t know it then, but our advertising structure was also created that same day.

We don’t advertise. Every once in awhile we’ll send out a postcard or two to get our name out there, but basically our advertising strategy is, “If you’re not happy, tell us. If you’re happy, tell someone else.” Our business grows every day because of our satisfied clients.
